1/11/2010: This year, the AMA – UCLA Chapter is also proud to support the AMA
Healthier Life Steps campaign. The Healthier Life Steps campaign
focuses on the modification of four key health behaviors—poor diet,
physical inactivity, tobacco use, and excessive/risky use of alcohol.
Linked to the onset of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and countless
other conditions, taking small, but concrete steps to modify these
lifestyle behaviors in our patients can help prevent and manage these
chronic health conditions. As heart disease is the leading cause of
death in both U.S men and women, the AMA-UCLA Chapter is using the
Hoops for Health tournament to advocate for cardiovascular disease
awareness and promote physical activity with the theme “Play your way
to a healthy heart.” The AMA will have information available at the
event about using exercise as a preventive “medicine” against common
chronic health conditions, and have free low-literacy educational
materials available for distribution use at the student run free
clinics we support.
